Malaysia’s largest energy firm reports 300% rise in crypto-linked power theft

From 2018 to 2024, Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad observed a 300% spike in electricity theft linked to illegal crypto mining, highlighting the growing financial burden on the electrical grid.

Joint operations between TNB and government authorities target the dismantling of illegal mining setups. Property owners have faced extraordinary bills, such as 278,400 USD, exacerbating the issue of unauthorized electricity consumption.
