The US runs the third-largest monthly deficit in history, with May’s 316 billion USD budget shortfall

The U.S. Recorded a budget deficit of 316 billion USD in May 2025, making it the third-largest deficit historically. The cumulative deficit for 2025 rose to 1.36 trillion USD, which is 14% more than the previous year.

Interest payments on the national debt hit 92 billion USD in May, significantly impacting the budget shortfall. Although tax receipts increased by 15%, overall expenditures also rose, keeping budget pressures high.
