Malaysia now requires permits for US-made AI chip transfers

Effective immediately, Malaysia requires a Strategic Trade Permit for high-performance AI chips from the US. Firms must inform authorities at least 30 days before shipment to ensure regulatory oversight and compliance with the Strategic Trade Act 2010.

The new regulations are designed to address gaps in current laws, particularly regarding items not previously specified on the strategic items list. This broader application aims to improve scrutiny on devices with advanced processing capabilities.

Responding to US concerns over AI chip trafficking to China, Malaysia’s updated regulations enhance export controls. Local authorities are currently scrutinizing past shipments linked to potential legal violations, ensuring stricter compliance moving forward.
