US bill proposes 21st-century privateers to take on cybercrime

Arizona Representative David Schweikert introduced legislation aimed at combating cybercrime, including cryptocurrency-related offenses. The bill proposes the use of state-sanctioned privateers to tackle these issues, defining certain cybercrimes as acts of war against the United States.

The bill grants the president the authority to issue ‘letters of marque’ for the seizure of property from cybercriminals. With an estimated loss of over 3 billion USD in cryptocurrency related to cybercrimes in 2025, its passage could reshape cybersecurity and asset recovery strategies.
