German political groups suggest ending tax advantages for Bitcoin

In 2024, Germany saw approximately €47 billion in untaxed profits from Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The Left Party and Greens believe that the current tax-free holding period incentivizes non-compliance, with only 3% of the 7 million crypto users fulfilling tax duties.

The proposal to end tax-free status for Bitcoin has gained traction among the Left and Greens, who argue it is outdated. However, opposition exists, particularly from the far-right AfD party, while the stance of business-friendly CDU remains uncertain.
