Malaysian energy provider TNB faces over 1.1 billion USD losses from cryptocurrency mining and electricity theft

TNB has incurred losses of approximately 1,100 million USD primarily due to illegal cryptocurrency mining activities, highlighting the growing challenges in managing energy resources.

More than 13,827 instances of electricity theft related to cryptocurrency mining have been detected, prompting TNB to work closely with police and regulatory bodies to combat these illegal practices.

To enhance monitoring, TNB is installing smart meters in substations, aiming to detect unusual energy consumption instantly, streamlining the surveillance of electricity use.
