330 million USD Bitcoin social engineering theft victim is elderly US citizen

On April 28, 2025, an elderly US citizen lost 330 million USD in a Bitcoin heist, now the fifth-largest theft ever recorded. Advanced social engineering was employed to access the victim’s wallet, leading to a complex laundering operation that dispersed funds across 300 wallets and multiple exchanges.

Experts note that this laundering operation reflected meticulous planning and automation, making tracing the stolen Bitcoin exceedingly difficult. Once converted to Monero, the privacy of the funds was enhanced, severely complicating any potential recovery.
