Layer 2 solutions have successfully reduced congestion and lowered gas fees on Ethereum. Yet, some experts like David Hoffman suggest that Ethereum should adopt a strategic pivot to capture more revenue from transaction fees and mitigate competitive pressures from other blockchains.
The Dencun upgrade has led to a significant increase in fees collected by Layer 2s like Base, raising questions about their net benefit to Ethereum. Base has paid more than 20 million USD in fees, but this remains a fraction of their earnings compared to what they keep from transaction fees.
