Bulgaria missed 25 billion USD debt payoff by selling Bitcoin in 2018

In 2018, Bulgaria sold 213,500 Bitcoin, then valued at approximately 3.5 billion USD, which has since grown to over 25 billion USD. This amount exceeds Bulgaria’s public debt of 24 billion USD.

Experts argue that Bulgaria’s decision reflects a broader apprehension toward cryptocurrencies as potential reserve assets. Many governments still view Bitcoin as speculative, not recognizing its viability as a strategic investment.
