Coinbase appeals to Supreme Court to end third-party doctrine allowing access to customer data

Coinbase has filed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to reconsider the third-party doctrine, a legal principle that allows the IRS to access customer information from third parties, including cryptocurrency exchanges.

The company argues that the current legal framework compromises user privacy rights, particularly as it pertains to blockchain technology and digital records.

In 2016, the IRS demanded financial information from Coinbase for over 500,000 customers through a John Doe Summons, which has since been reduced by a district court to 14,355 customers amid ongoing legal disputes.
