Governor of Russian Bitcoin mining hotspot calls for year-round ban

The Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev has proposed a year-round ban on Bitcoin and altcoin mining until 2031, citing energy shortages. The existing seasonal ban has freed up approximately 300 megawatts of energy since January 1, 2025.

The call for further restrictions on mining has elicited mixed responses from local government and industry stakeholders, as Bitcoin mining has helped revitalize the regional economy. Discussions regarding new federal tax structures for miners are currently underway.
