Insights from BTQ’s Bitcoin Quantum Testnet regarding risks of older BTC

On January 12, 2026, BTQ Technologies launched a Bitcoin Quantum testnet to investigate post-quantum signature security. The initiative replaces Bitcoin’s conventional signatures to counter emerging quantum risks linked to public key exposure.

The primary risk for ‘old BTC’ relates to exposed public keys from legacy output types. Approximately 6.26 million BTC are potentially vulnerable due to address reuse, amplifying concerns over digital signature security in a quantum future.
