Lawyer Proposes Criminal Exemption for Former Chairman of FLC

Lawyer Nguyen Trong Nghia has proposed that the Trial Panel exempt Mr. Trinh Van Quyet, the former Chairman of FLC, from criminal liability for the crime of “manipulating the securities market” and apply a prison sentence equivalent to his temporary detention for the crime of “fraudulent appropriation of assets”. Nghia cited mitigating circumstances, including the defendant’s family proactively compensating nearly 2.5 trillion VND and Quyet’s poor health (suffering from a severe illness), warranting consideration. Over 5,000 letters requesting leniency have also been submitted from various partners and local authorities, showing support for Quyet. The Procuracy has also proposed to reduce Quyet’s sentence from 3 years to a 4 billion VND fine for “manipulating the securities market” and from 18 years to 7-8 years for “fraudulent appropriation of assets”. Other defendants were similarly suggested to receive reduced sentences. The full damages caused have been compensated by Quyet, and the assets currently frozen are also recommended to be returned.
