The ban in Irkutsk aims to ease the strain on the power grid, reallocating 320 MW of capacity, saving approximately 146 billion rubles (1.7 billion USD) on infrastructure. Governor Igor Kobzev stated that mining restrictions were necessary to avoid energy shortages.
The decision, effective from April 7, 2025, was made in response to local appeals for intervention. Initial measures limited mining from January to March, but the permanent extension reflects ongoing energy consumption challenges in the region.
