Russian policymaker says state should seize crypto from illegal miners

Yevgeny Masharov, a Russian policymaker, proposed that the state should have the authority to confiscate cryptocurrency from illegal Bitcoin miners. This aims to stop unregistered mining activities and make them unprofitable.

Current legislation permitting the seizure of crypto from unregistered miners is advancing in the State Duma. It is intended to alleviate energy strain in regions like Irkutsk, where illegal mining has been detrimental.

Masharov also advocates for using seized assets to establish a state crypto fund, which would utilize confiscated cryptocurrencies for public services and aims to improve state control over crypto mining.
