Vietjet Air has announced plans to operate flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao starting April 15, 2025, using the Comac ARJ21 aircraft. Vietjet has sent a request to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) for support in operating this new aircraft. ACV confirmed that they are fully prepared regarding infrastructure but still need to complete some procedures.
The reopening of this route is expected to facilitate travel for passengers to Con Dao, especially after Bamboo Airways ceased operations on this route. Passengers typically have to connect through Tan Son Nhat or Can Tho before proceeding on smaller aircraft.
The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority has surveyed the design and operational standards of the Comac ARJ21 aircraft in China and assessed that the flight safety standards are similar to those of the US, with only minor differences. This will facilitate the development of civil aviation operations in the context of challenges faced by the Vietnamese aviation industry regarding aircraft shortages.
