Washington, D.C. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb has filed a lawsuit against Athena Bitcoin for neglecting scams against the elderly. Allegations include charging up to 26% fees on Bitcoin transactions without disclosure, leading to significant financial losses for victims.
The lawsuit claims that 93% of funds deposited through Athena’s ATMs were linked to fraud, reflecting the urgent need for better consumer protection practices. Schwalb argues that the company’s operations contribute to the exploitation of vulnerable populations.
